Marilyn Kay
As a child, Marilyn Kay had difficulty learning to read. "I was very puzzled because I could do other things easily," she said. When she grew up, teaching reading became a passion for her. As executive director and founder of The Reading Group in Champaign-Urbana, she offered specialized reading instruction to hundreds of youngsters. "I really enjoy working with very young children and seeing them suddenly understand what reading is all about," Marilyn said.
Now that she's retired, she's joined the WILL-TV Young Learners Initiative Advisory Group, helping provide ideas on how the initiative can reach more children, parents and teachers. "We have a wonderful group of people gathering around the table to share ideas. It's powerful," Marilyn said. "Everyone appears to have a similar concern about early intervention to help children. WILL does such a good job being a frontrunner in the area of excellent children's television programming. It's great to see that they're also helping foster the love of reading in our community."
